Cartridge starting was an option USAF F-4 fighters as well. Not used very often. Ground cart with pressurized air was almost as quick and more reliable.

I did it a few times ....as Dave said...a huge cloud of black smoke which you didn't want to breathe. Was designed for aircraft sitting alert. The requirement was to be airborne within 5 minutes of the horn going off. That requirement was relaxed at night (to 15 minutes) when the crews might be asleep when the call came.
