Some early British jet fighter planes used a shotgun staring arrangement to get the engine started but the cartridge was bigger than a shotgun . I think the Canberras/B-57s that the US AF borrowed from the UK had that kind of starter. To manually crank some of the Lanz Bulldogs you had to take the steering wheel off and use it to turn over the ending.
