Yes. they used a 12 ga shotgun cartridge totally filled with slow burning powder, no wad or steel / lead shot like a real shotgun shell.
You turned the engine to the correct spot and fired the shell . The gas pressure it forced into the single cylinder 2 cycle diesel engine, caused it to spin and start.
I still have one laying around. Here is pictures of a Marshal starting cartridge.

Field Marshal was British, Lanz was German. Both similar single cylinder diesel tractors.
