For lots of reasons:
We are herd animals and social isolation is already causing lots of issues. Gonna see that in a huge way after this is over, methinks - many calls for increased isolation from urban sources while I think suburban and rural areas will foster more social connections after this, not fewer.
For lots of kids school is a bright spot in their life compared to home life.
Unequal distribution of resources means a lot of kids don’t have what they need to learn online.
How you going to feed them, the .gov feeds a lot of kids.
Majority of parents are at work, not at home to supervise kids. One of the major legal theories under which schools operate is the concept of the school/teacher ‘in loco parentis’. So the parents can swan off t work, the spa, wherever parents go during the school day.
Etc.
It’s a nice idea ... in theory. It works for some kids and some families. Increased integration of online and electronic resources, sure. Total online education, unlikely.
