If the treasury would pull that stunt, then there would be NOWHERE to hide. Right now, there is around $4 trillion in actual dead presidents, and 36 trillion in funny money created by the fed. We can only hope the treasury does not fire up the actual printing press. God help us if it does.
Much less than $4 trillion, about $1.8 Trillion of actual currency in circulation. But Currency in circulation, and reserves, and treasuries all hold the top spot on the heirarchy of money so they are all close to the same thing. But you are right you can't walk around with a T-Bond and spend it like cash most places.
