The problem with long-term ventilation is that the lungs become accustomed to having it breathe for them. Sometimes hard to wean patients off. Of course the sedation has to be withdrawn and people fight the tube. I'm not sure that with coronavirus long-term ventilation is a good option. They die from the co-morbidities like heart/renal failure---the ever popular underlying medical problems.

Saw a vid tonight a 39 y/o woman recorded in the UK. She's still in the unit, using O2/cannula, said she felt "10x better than she had been feeling," and begged people to take the physical distancing seriously and STOP SMOKING.
