Why is it a zero sum game?

An interesting observation from 30+ yrs, I have never forgotten a statement from a Professor in College, Agriculture (as a whole not individually) is a low profit industry. I have kept track of financial results for the last 20+ years and one of the measurements I keep track of is Return on Equity and it's always been on Average a negative number, There are operations that are profitable but for every one of those there are those that are not profitable and they lose whatever the profitable ones earn. The Professor's statement is true. The question you have to ask yourself is this? Am I going to be on the postive side of the ledger or the negative side?
