Wisconsin | When I was about 10 an odd stray dog appeared in the distance every week or so for a while, very skittish and wild. We usually shot stray dogs in those days, and I don't remember why this one didn't get shot, or how we managed to catch it. Must have just been food. We got a leash on it, but it was still pretty crazy for a few days. Somehow my mother figured it was a purebred pointer, maybe Visla?, this was way before the internet, and we'd never saw any unusual breeds like that. She put a lost and found, or giveaway add somewhere and when somebody showed up, about a week after we caught him, he was just as friendly as could be, and they were happy to get him. So yes, a dog fending for itself will be hungry, skittish, aggressive, etc. and can revert to normal quickly with food and human contact.
Based on that experience, I believe the story and the dog expert.
