I would wonder if you had some wires rubbing to the point that the insulation was gone. We had an 8300 that had an intermittent problem like that and the electrical plug that ran into the fuel pump had a twist in the harness where the wires rubbed and eventually wore into each other, but would only just arc once in a while. Otherwise, I bet it is fuel condition problem lots of crappy fuel around since Katrina....we drained a bunch of water out of diesel fuel last fall when the weather turned cold, when we discovered ice was a problem in a fuel line in a tractor. It drained out of the sump and the fuel tank, but the fuel line had a low spot in it where water had settled and when it froze it restricted fuel when the unit was under load. After visiting with a Cat mechanic we blew air from the pump to the tank and the ice ended up in the tank, and then we drained it after it warmed up.
