Absolutely had my arse handed to me last two years trying to drill covers after harvest spring and fall - wet, cold, then more wet, after that a bunch of cold. Need to change my thinking on interseeded covers.
What covers have you guys used that are "sure shot" reliable. Also, what timing and application methods work for you? Crops range from near canopy to just emerging presently.
Very different climate than you. In corn I try to get in as early as possible this year kind of got away from me. So if a guy can get in at V2 with covers go actually have some growth. Late-season get winter Rye on. The next spring go in green with whatever crop adroll the Rye.
I don't know in your area planting versus the growth stage of the Rye of if rolling will work? For us planting mid May too late May Rye heads out June 1st. At that point there's been no competition of water.
I want to switch to a roller versus herbicide but it still might be a couple years before I can afford one. |
