If you have an HD tv, you do not need a converter. Channel 5 has much lower wattage than 8 or 13. Maybe going through a converter the signal isn't strong enough? Just a thought. I'm 70 miles from Ames ( I believe that is where their tower is and my regular antenna with an amplifier pulls in 5 fine. I just read your post again, with digital signal, there is no channel 5, it is replaced by 5.1, just like channel 8 and 13 are replaced by 8.1 and 13.1. Hope this is clearer than mud!
