Subject: Stalk rolls and No-till

Southeast MN
I’m running a 630 Clarke machine cornhead, exact duplicate of a 693 Deere. Right now it has Clarke machine stalk rolls with the 2200 style cnh knives. Was happy with it last fall but this spring I’m not very pleased with what it’s like no tilling beans behind it with a Case Ih 950 even with new leading discs and max down pressure on springs. It’s decent but not great. Just leaves a lot of the stalk on the ground with a few knife nicks but basically whole.

I’m wanting to do something to get more stalk break down. Kind of torn between the 360 chain roll and calmer rolls. I like the concept of calmer but my fear with them is that in our high residue conditions and normally cool damp springs I’ll end up with a mat of residue that keeps the ground cold and wet. I like the 360 chain roll because it looks to me like it’ll do a lot of good in getting stalks busted open to start decay faster. But yet leave the stalks a little more whole so they don’t mat down tight to the soil.

Keep in mind we normally shell corn in November and then it freezes up a few weeks later, in the spring I’m generally wanting to get going on beans by May 1st so we don’t get a lot of time for stalk decomposition.

I know the school of thought used to be run fluted rolls and pick higher to keep stalks off the ground but that doesn’t seem to be practical for us anymore with 200+ bu corn. And I always end up running the head low to get the few stalks that tip over while we wait for the corn to dry down. Dad still has a 300 husker and 343 head with fluted rolls that he picks a few loads for the calves with and those stalks always give more trouble to no till in to.

Pictures to give an idea of what I’ve got now. Picture from tractor cab was of some poorer stalks I picked early. Have stalk stompers that I didn’t do much with last fall because they need a little tlc, going to get them on this fall to help bust up root crowns.

Planted picture is behind our corn planter with row cleaners where I had some corn on corn, that planted really well.
