Southwest OK | I’m in quite a bit different type of country, but several years of losing money on grain, even in a good year soured me on farming completely.
What I own was put into grass.
I had some landlords that said you can do anything as long as you pay rent, except plant grass. I just quit farming and started grazing whatever came up. Added sheep to take care of the broadleaves and they have become my most profitable enterprise.
I am almost always home by five, have plenty of time to travel, and do 6-8 days of work for neighbors a month, usually doing something I really enjoy. $200 a day.
Amazing how small my fuel and repair bills have gotten, and how much selling off machinery eased my debt load.
I’m less stressed, a better husband and father, and immeasurably happier.
