Whenever we put one in the headgate to pull a calf we put a quick release rope halter on her and tie it loose so if she goes down and we open the headgate she can't get clear away. But make sure you take the halter off right away after your done. A few years ago a friend of mine haltered a heifer to pull the calf and when they got done the heifer wasn't cooperating for taking the halter off so they left it for later. When he came back some how the heifer had got the lead rope looped around the calfs neck while she was licking and strangled the calf.
