Subject: MF 4880 - new purchase questions

NC Indiana
Picked up a decent 4880 with 5600 hours at auction today, have a few questions if someone can help.
Rear main seal is leaking pretty good, can it be changed without pulling motor?
Is there a way to tell if transmission snap rings have been updated?
What do we need to watch for on the coolant?
How do we check for axle bearing play?
Planning to check valves, any tricks to set lash correctly?
When using the brake it's notchy, like it's trying to engage a gear or something. Just worn pads? It stops ok, just feels wrong.
Last, it lopes a lot at idle and smokes terribly. Once it's warm the lope isn't so much, but still heavy white smoke. We're told it will clean up when it's working hard but it seems excessive. Should we have injectors or pump checked? Or is it normal?
