Subject: RE: MF 4880 - new purchase questions

Urbana, OH
The only issue on the top shaft was the lack of the spacer. We did do some work on the lower part of the tranny. At the urging of Onion Farmer and another very knowledgeable farmer we removed the side cover to check the shift forks and the lower snap rings to see if they were still there. They did have some issues with using a two piece snap ring versus a one piece snap ring on the lower shaft. Ours had the two piece snap ring and of course had popped off. To put the one piece snap ring in you must tear the entire tranny apart. We went to a local machinist and got him to make a heavy duty two piece collar to replace the two piece snap ring and not have to do a complete tear down to put the one piece rings in. Our shift forks had a good bit of wear in them so we had them welded and ground. Without Onion Farmer, a couple other farmers, and a good service manual we would be lost.
