This is common, if you think about it, how can a dealer back a 40 year old tractor on their used lot.

Easily. 40 year old tractors don't need as much work and the work they do need is cheaper. Whoops this 40 year old tractor needs a $10,000 diesel particulate filter is something that just doesn't happen. Even beyond that is the "as-is" sale option.

If they wanted to, they could sell them just fine. Bid right on the trade in so you have room for necessary refurbishment. Then your shop and your parts department make their money too. Everything happens the same, just on a proportionately smaller scale. Including the sales revenue. Sales managers would rather make their margin on 6 figure machines than 5 figure machines. Worse yet, sometimes a $50k older machine can pull the same implement as a $150k newer machine. A $50k sale that prevents a $150k sale is the kind of nightmare that keeps salespeople up at night.

To me, it's the mark of a dealership that doesn't care as much about servicing the needs of customer's with shallower pockets.
