SW Ohio | 1000 acre guy here
I've been offered, and taken, better basis bids when selling grain. Just this week I was offered $0.08 better than posted bid on ~4500 bushels of beans, and the same push for ~7500 for Feb delivery. The story I was told is that my river terminal had sold beans to the processor and didn't have the order filled yet. I deliver direct to processor and everyone is happy. I've also had the river terminal bid better basis over the processor, when they posted a worse bid, to get my bushels. I've also given my usual terminal the chance to bid the same as the next one down river, and they will match it 99% of the time because I am easy to deal with. Not hard to get $0.05, but more is rare. Depending on your region, 1000 acre farms with a full time operator carry more clout than one realizes. | |
