NW KS/ SC ID
V6 5 spd 2wd regular cab full size pickup with ABS and airbags.

He will learn alot about driving (2wd and 5spd) wont have much chances for distractions (5 spd and regular cab) and the insurance company will treat you fair (v6, abs, airbags) basically any 1995 and up GM pickup will fit this bill.

When I was in high school and then college, I had two identical 1991 GM pickups, (still have them actually) and one was a 6.2L naturally aspirated diesel and a 4 speed, and the other a V6 gas and a 5 speed. The more powerful higher reving much easier to get in trouble V6 cost less then the low output NA diesel, just because it was a 6 cylinder.

If a car is needed, get a GM full size car with the 3.8L v-6. Engine is 300K+ capable, and the bigger the car, the bigger the crumple zone.
Both can repaired anywhere, and both are useful on the farm after he upgrades.
