Subject: RE: Hog Manure vs Retail Fertilizer

Nw Iowa
We have all kinds of hog manure. Finishing no, nursery, lagoon, and from sow site. Of course the best is finishing, but we have had real good results wit the sow manure from the lagoon if we spike it with commercial fertilizer. This is the 18000 gal a acre stuff that is a lot of water. On that stuff we Learned that we only take the hog manure at about 60-70% of available analysis and spread the rest with commercial fertilizer is our best yielding We pay almost commercial for some, The lagoon stuff we get pretty discounted and some are own barns. Spring manure is high priced here if they give it to you because spring compaction can be bad. Bottom line if they can apply it in good conditions in the fall is best but Falls like this are a struggle. We got most of ours drag lined this year but will be finishing tomorrow with some stuff that we truck a distance ( 3 to 6 miles) . Where hog manure really shines is when you get a farm with low fertility, you can build fertility pretty fast.we will cover almost a 1/3 of our corn acres this year and it takes a fair amount of management. Believe me, It is a lot easier to call the coop to spread the fertilizer.
