I know this is not what you are asking about but I have had good luck combining corn that was absolutely flat with a corn head set for 20" rows. I tried to run close to perpendicular to the way the rows were laid down. I worked my way across from the upwind side. Didn't pay any attention to how the rows were planted. It was slow going and ruined a few snouts, but had very little loss.
