Subject: Backgrounding calves on covers/annuals??

Ne Nebraska
As I was opening up my silage pit more tonight had a random idea pop in my head. Does anyone background calves on annuals/cover crops? Even if need to supplement some part of a ration. I’m thinking add wheat to crop rotation and early to mid August after wheat comes off plant something calves can graze coming off pastures mid-October. I’d like to graze 45-60 days starting mid October. Be on irrigated ground that is short on water so can focus on another crop with that well in July/August. What type of mix could be drilled, how much grazing could a guy get and what could I expect for gains? Thanks for any thoughts and ideas!
