The sudangrass, winter triticale gets planted late spring/early summer.  If the triticale doesn't get vernalized it will mostly stay vegetative.  Instead of shooting a head you end up with a bunch of green growth in the understory that the cattle go after and in the process also take in the dry sudangrass.
