Again with anything, you have to figure out what your goals would be. For grazing stockers, I shy away from turnips or radishes and look for more grasses as they eat less and gain more as it’s not as washy. Brassicas grow very fast and tend to shade the grasses. Great for maintaining cows, but hard to put gain on a calf when what they are eating is mainly water.
Now for building soil health, no question that the mix above is far superior to a mix of grass.
I grazed oats and peas last spring. It was ok, but did not hold up as well as the annual rye. Dry matter basis per acre is what I’m after when selecting grazing species | |
