Subject: RE: hay cost

Amherst WI
I try to make the best quality hay I can make on my own ground because rent, seed, cutting, raking and baling poor hay costs the same as good hay.

My figures were based on four cuttings of good alfalfa or horse quality orchard grass/alfalfa mix and that’s not figuring any loss if a crop gets rained on. I’m usually cutting 28-30 days.

I bought some poor quality stuff real cheap from a neighbor that I’m using for fiber in my steer ration now. I think I have about $60/ton in it. If I make my own steer hay and beef cow hay this year I’ll do 3 cuttings to try to get it courser and reduce harvesting costs by one crop.
