Subject: RE: hay cost

Matt,
What are you using your "hay" for? "Hay" is such a broad term. Hot alfalfa is so hard to make especially dry and everyone and their brother wants to discount it in a heartbeat when buying. Its as bad as growing commercial wheat lately. I raise some grass hay for my steers and it is a lot less stressful than trying to make dry alfalfa. Dry cornstalks would be a fine stub for it in my situation but they are hard to make in the fall. What I have found out from my custom baler is, there is a difference between what the prices for hay is at Equity on the auction and what people are willing to pay privately. There is also a difference in quality too. The actual difference is what he will not cough up though...
