Often times the component( engine, transmission, gearcase, insert whatever you may have here) you are working on was not originally designed for the exact purpose that you have but was adapted from it's original use so therefor not every aspect of it is perfect but it is too cost prohibitive to change it so that it does fit perfectly. I'm not defending or bashing the engineers but I have worked with enough engineers to know that their hands are tied too, In a perfect world they could design and redesign everything to be perfect, then we really couldn't afford to buy it.
