Central Arkansas | We've been taking the opposite approach with good results. No fertilizer until we have a stand, then fertilize according to soil tests. This is usually potash and urea with stabilizer. Cotton with pre-plant nitrogen will grow faster, but when I count the leaves or nodes, there is usually no difference. We often get big rains between planting and fertilizing and we believe have more applied nitrogen available by not having the nitrogen out there when the big rains come. We also have one trip over the field instead of two or three. This approach doesn't work great every year, but usually does for us. | |
