If you haven't then I would see him and ask if he needs you to get and pay for the parts for him.
We had a local truck mechanic that would never charge enough, took forever to get him to prepare a bill. He was so cheap sometimes I'm not sure he was covering his parts cost. The shop he rented evicted him because he was behind on rent. But he was a good guy! If you were broke down on the side of the road he would always come rescue you.
It all changed when he got married and new bride made him go get a real job.
