Subject: Saddle blankets?

Southern kansas
50 years ago the boss man taught me how to saddle a horse.
He explained that blanket's purpose is to give the saddle something to slip on so the horse doesn't get a saddle sore from a pad slipping around.

What has been bugging me for awhile now is, for example,
Watched a horse trainer on rfdtv today and per usual no blankets just pads for him and the students.
Maybe they are only mounted for only an hour and the trainer wants you to see the special pads that he sells.

Another thing that has bugged me for years, why are the blankets sold in most stores today, four to six inches to short in both directions?

Please spare me the flames atv riders (haha).
