I honestly don’t know how they actually come up with a cash price anymore, there can’t hardly be enough non captive hogs to actually even call it a market.


When the contracts first started with the non captive hogs setting the price for some type of "formula" pricing, I could see the handwriting on the wall. Always said it's a dog chasing it's tail. Sadly I stayed on something like that for a couple of yrs to long due to a lack of a something else being offered

My 91 yr old FIL likes to tell me what hogs are worth..."I see on the market reports the Western Corn belt price is...or the Chicago price is...". So I tell him those numbers may or may not have a bearing on what I actually get. This is accompanied by a blank stare.

Not picking on him, this is typical of any conversation I have with someone who has a little knowledge of the hog industry but isn't really in the trenches.
