Kansas
We use a 15 foot mower early in the spring. At this point you can go quite fast, 10mph if field is smooth. Just hitting the stalks with the mower frame will usually break them off. Don't mow too low as the stalks near the base can get sharp and be hard on tires. If your ground is any like ours in south central Kansas be sure you have a cover crop (wheat is what we have used but are trying some others this fall) or your cotton will blow out before it gets established.
