I used to wonder why everyone with hogs had 25% larger and newer equipment than similar size grain only farms. Then I got it to hogs and that question was answered.

Another factor is the larger planters can be bought for about the same price as the smaller planters. We have been running the first kinze TL16 (with pushers added to make it 16/31) for 10+ years on 800 acres, and, when we bought it (as a 16 row) it was no more expensive than an 8 row in similar condition. Right now 24 rows are pretty cheap for what they are and a local dealer had 2 36 planters that have been sitting a long time. A 24 row or 36 row might be impractical for some situations, but it seemed to us that buying the largest planter for the money made more sense. I like field work, but getting done faster is pretty nice especially when there is hog stuff to do.
