Southwest Illinois
I don't think there is a formula that fits every operation. In our area of SW Illinois you see it all. It all comes down to the economics of each deal. In our case we had been trading 16/31 Kinze's every 3rd year or so for about $5 per acre. About 3 years ago that price doubled so we started looking to add a 16/30 just for corn. It became immediately obvious that 16/30's were selling for about the same as 24/30's(machines with a couple years of use, not new). So it made zero sense to buy the 16/30 and if fact we waited and found a heck of a deal on a new one(24/30). was that what we needed, probably not. However, the extra capacity and the fact we no longer have to switch a planter over from corn to beans has been very beneficial. With the glut of 16/31's there are lot of guys with under 1000 total acres running them.
