It probably varies somewhat but basically consumption was roughly proportional to weight. Whether it is exactly proportional to weight is not as important as the overall tendency and concept. The best place to be is usually somewhere in between the extremes. I will take a bull who sires lighter calves easily that grow like crazy on moderate milk and good pastures. And who also sires heifers and cows who have calves that do the same. CED,YW/BW spread, CEM, MCW from a good breeder help you sort that out. Then take a good CED experienced cow out of this bull, put a terminal, different-breed bull on her and you have the best of both worlds in unassisted-birth, growthy F1 calves out of a moderate size cow. At least theoretically. I'll let you know how this works out in a couple years!
