17821x - 4/21/2017 19:01 The cow size argument may make sense if you are selling calves when you wean but kinda falls apart when you take an animal to finish. That 1100# cow will likely have a steer that is finished at 1100# but a 1500# cow can have a steer that is not finished until 1500#. Then if you do the multiplication of beef per acre it works out about the same. Mike, That is a very good point: steers tend to finish (in a conventional sense) at about the same weight as their dam. However, in my case I am LOOKING for a steer that "finishes" at 1100 lb! I will never take a steer to 1500 lb. I will rarely if ever sell one of my red and white steers at the sale barn and get docked because they're not black. In my case the smaller cow plan does in fact produce more beef per acre. By using a terminal bull to produce F1 steers and heifers for market I'm hoping to gain on that 1100 lb a bit, but have to do it in 13-14 months. |
