| Hello, I'm having a problem with the way the corn plant moves from the rear
of the corn head, through the feed rolls, and finally, into the cutterhead.
What happens is the stalks, as they lean forward , after they are cut off
at the ground, and the gathering chains are pulling them toward the feed
rolls, move into the feed rolls in a semi-horizontal direction of flow. When
all goes well the feed rolls "grab" the incoming flow of stalks and feed
them into the rotating cutterhead. The problem I'm having is that the feed
rolls "spin out" , for lack of a better description, on the incoming bundle
of corn. It seems as though the heavier I feed it, the more problem I have.
What I'm left with is a large amount of corn stalks on the head and none
in the feed rolls or behind it . It looks like the feed rolls just tear the
incoming plants off raggedly just in front of the rolls. And when that hap-
pens it is difficult to get the remaining large bundle of stalks to start feeding
back into the feed rolls again. Any help to correct this problem would be
appreciated.
The chopper I'm running is a John Deere 5400 with a 3 row wide head. I'm
thinking it is a feed roll problem because there just doesn't seem to be any
other solution. There seem to be some corn varieties that feed better than
others, but there is never a time when completely trouble free. Am currently
running a dura drum cutterhead with the segmented knives.
One of my concerns is the front top feed roll. The roll I'm using. is one that
is sold by John Deere and also by Kooima here in Iowa. It is a roll with six
rows of large teeth welded on the tube in a spiral pattern, three rows on the
left side, and a mirror image of those three rows mounted on the right side of
the same tube. The bottom front feed roll is John Deere original equipment
with the parallel, horizontal cleats and looks to be in better than average
condition.
Would I be better off with the "older?" front top feed roll with the
horizontal cleats , that have more fine teeth to grab the corn? Will that
feed corn into the harvester better than the large tooth , spiral type feed
roll that I'm using now?
