Hard drives are pretty cheap these days. Get a new hard drive, install it, reload all your software. Once you get everything running again, hook up the old HD; You may need to search the 'net for specifics. If your lucky, your new system will recognize the old drive and you'll be able to copy files to your new HD. - It has worked for me.
Installing a hard drive is easy. Reloading software isn't too bad if you have all the discs. You could also hook it up to another computer and see what happens, but if you plan on keeping the current computer, you may not want to trust your current ?HD anyway.
