New Mexico | Teach em to Lead 1st, just drag em till they lead generally...it does not take long either.
course with the Leading, Your gonna naturally show em how to Sit, AND Shake.
also: sit, come, go, watch etc..
Teach em how to RETRIEVE:
Pups generally Love this, AND all it takes is a rope with a plastic / rubber acheivable end ( you can get em at the Bird Dog Stores ).
Then SWIM em to Retrieve ALSO. MO.
Use the leash when working stock to start with: Do NOT let em to aggressive on Stock.
It's a piece of pie...people do this every day.
Some of thee Best stock dogs are Goldens or Labs or Crosses thereof.
