NE Oregon | I think the biggest thing with training a dog to do anything is bonding with the animal and fostering a desire to please. My wife has an incredible knack for doing that. Her dog (border collie) lives to please. Once you have created that bond with a dog, and that desire to please, it isn't terribly difficult to train them for herding. They have a natural instinct to do it, you just work on directions, brakes, and recall. I've heard more than one person say you shouldn't try to work livestock with a dog until they are over a year old, spend that time developing the dogs ability and desire to learn knew things before unleashing their urge to chase cattle. The last thing you want is for a dog that learns to ignore you because it's more fun to just chase the cows in circles.
