Sandy Hook, MB | Hello 560HighCrop
In Canada, it is mandatory for them to have that RFID tag when they leave the herd of origin. That means hauling to market, to the vet hospital, or even to another pasture. I find it easiest to put them in the calves at a day old. Tagging older animals always seemed to lead to an infection in the animals ear. I think that I started back in the "s" or "t" year with those & after I read your post, I went out & checked some cows & I did notice a couple of "t's" that are missing them. Another good thing is that if an animal loses it's dangle tag, I can reference it's RFID tag # & print up a new herd ID tag for it. My older cows don't have them & it now seems like such a pain that I'm going to load up some cull cows to haul in & "oh, yeah,... I've got to run them through the chute first because I have to put that darn (usually a more powerful word than darn) RFID tag in them first!!!" |
