just wondering if in the long run we have many automotive mfgs. that are costing american people piles of money to make just a few jobs, and are going to other countries that are smart enough not to mess with vehicle production or liabilities associated with them.

American car manufacturers go to Europe where there are several local manufacturers too. They often have local factories that allow them to bypass import taxes or quotas if manufactured in the EU, and some models specifically designed to the EU market, usually smaller cars, made it back to the U.S., like the Ford Focus. Some European design teams also work remotely for the American market, it's a global world now.

You can't really blame the countries that "are smart enough not to mess with vehicle production." There would be hundreds of inefficient brands otherwise, and they would soon go bankrupt anyway, so you'll end up with only a few eventually, just like today. And the Irish would still be driving pony carts, since even the DeLorean was built in the UK... ;)
