Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot | In a dryland situation there, maybe. But most family farms here have several to 20-30 employees during the summer. Irrigators, tractor drivers, no way can family do it all. Most of them grow row crops and will double that during harvest. Still talking family run operations, that are managed by a family, with maybe a few kids coming up. Maybe 4-5k acres. Even all of the smaller guys I can think of have several summer employees at least, and maybe one or two full time guys. Takes a lot of labor to keep everything irrigated, and even hay farms need lots of bodies to stick in tractor seats at times.
To say someone is not a family farm because they hire on a few guys is ridiculous. I'd say still owned and managed primarily by a family, but really, who cares? | |
