| Hi MCatSHF.
If I'm worried about the wind I use pea or flax straw as it knits together. Or if I'm using cereal straw just unroll the bales along the crown and blow with the shredder along the sides. Usually takes 20-30 bales to cover 60x250. Those old wet bales work great in the shredder for this. Might be a little more work than tires. Only had trouble once when the wind came up the day after covering the pit.
I don't usually feed a pit the year it was put up. (Unless some yearlings have a dance on it. ) I usually try to have an extra years worth of feed ahead. Never have any trouble with spoilage. Or the crows. | |
