Grabill, Indiana | The livestock sector wants us to return to LDP corn, that's pretty obvious from the comments I have heard from key industry economists in both beef and swine. They harken for the days when meat was the only game in town for adding value to a corn kernel.
The article has some interesting points that the crop industry should examine, the massive amounts of tillage is one. I see it in our community with the fragile forest derived soils that are highly prone to erosion. Even soybean stubble is being turned under with no covercrop or protection from erosion.
As to the CRP comments, there were many acres enrolled in CRP that barely qualified and probably should never have been enrolled in the first place. That has to account for a portion of the acres removed from CRP, of course there are acres that should never be farmed for corn but are being planted now.
