SE ND | We have a couple quarters of land that are hard to farm due to clay hills, poor drainage (designated wetlands), and a mixture of sand and gumbo. Probably average 100bu corn/25bu beans/40bu wheat. Thinking about converting the land to alfalfa/hay and selling that. Any advice? Already have tractors, semis with trailers and even some storage for hay. Anyone done this or can anyone help me with the math on this? Not sure what kind of alfalfa yield to expect either.
Some advantage I see are:
1. Already have alot of the equipment
2. Potentially able to get more out of wet ground and dry ground
3. Close to town and farm so easy haul
4. Breaks up work on corn/bean rotation so should be able to utilize labor more efficiently
5. Hay zero of our current ditches etc so could begin to hay those as well for more income
6. Potential to get into cattle in next few years so would be one step closer for that set up
Disadvantages:
1. know nothing about growing alfalfa for hay
2. need to buy additional equipment
3. take farmland out of corn/bean production, increasing my cost per acre of other corn/bean equipment
Any help would be appreciated! | |
