The connections between the posts is not all that solid, once you add in paint, rust, only wire touching wire.

Add in a depth of less than 2 feet in possibly dry soil, and you are not getting as much grounding as you think.

I'm not saying it doesn't work, I've done that for 5 years with a solar unit on my cornstalk grazing with a vice grips as a clamp..... ;)

Just, putting a ground rod 6 feet deep into moist subsoil is a far better ground under tough conditions.....
