We have always had good luck boiling 5 minutes, cooling in ice water, then put it in heavy freezer bags. I never noticed any "cob" taste. If you are going to freeze it more than 6 months or so, my grandmother wrapped each ear in light foil, then put them in a freezer bag to help prevent freezer burn.

To heat it back up when you get ready to eat it, you can either boil it again until it is good and hot, or microwave inside a plastic bag to "steam" it.
