Subject: Foam Isulation

Redoing our kitchen in old farm house and am getting 2 different opinions and quotes on sprayed in foam insulation. Higher estimate is for 1" closed cell foam at R6 with 4" fiberglass kraft batt insulation at R19 over top. Says closed cell is better at stopping air flow. Exterior walls are wood clapboard siding with vinyl overtop and no housewrap so we have airflow. Lower estimate is for 5" open cell spray foam for R22.5. Recommending open cell because it expands and would be better at filling nooks and crannies which we have a lot. Open cell is less than 60% of closed cell. Hope to get a third quote tomorrow from another contractor. Price isn't enough to sway me either way as I don't ever expect to have the walls ripped out again in my lifetime and want to do it right.
