Chris you could have a problem. I can't tell exactly what you really have but here goes. I cut my teeth on pump jack wells. Very efficient and effective pumping system, slow; but good. Several parts in there working. Rods, tubing, foot seals and the caseing. Sounds like the rod broke. Most common problem. Not a simple fix. The rod runs in the tubing to the bottom. Can be long and heavy. Requires an absolute vertical pull. Ther are many "fishing tools" to capture the broken rod and pull the rod out. Rods are usually in 20 foot sections an unscrew at the joints. Can't really tell but you may want to talk to a professional and get some good advice. Mine is worth exactly what it is costing you. Once they get setup and get the fishing done then they can service the well then it will go another 50 years.
